Marathon Digital will use landfill methane to mine Bitcoin in Utah pilot project
Marathon Digital has actually started mining Bitcoin (BTC) using power generated from methane gas siphoned off a landfill. The 280-kW off-grid pilot task is running in Utah.Marathon partnered with Nodal Power on the project. Nodal Power was released in November 2022 and produces energy from land fill gas in the southeastern United States and Texas. It raised $13 million in a seed round in August to operate two sites, among that includes a data center.A Nodal Power datacenter. Source: PRNewswireMarathon said in a declaration that the task is “part of a broader initiative being carried out by the Company to confirm its ability to catch methane produced from land fills, convert it into electricity, and then use that electrical power to power Bitcoin miners.” Marathon CEO Fred Thiel stated:” Should the outcomes of the pilot job fulfill our expectations, we look forward to expanding our footprint in this area and assisting garbage dump operators and others meet their ecological targets.” Bitcoin miners are actively looking for new green generating options. Genesis Digital Assets Limited, for example, set up an 8-MW facility in Sweden in August that utilizes hydropower. It launched a report that month that discovered crypto mining at garbage dumps is practical and has a number of benefits for miners and garbage dump owners, as well as the environment. According to the United Nations, methane is far more harmful to the environment than co2. #Bitcoin is incentivized to benefit from this lost eco-friendly power and we are honored to be a part of this pilot with @MarathonDH https://t.co/BxC8O84SWh— Nodal (@NodalPower) November 2, 2023
Marathon reported second-quarter incomes this year fell short of expectations, in spite of the reality that it mined a record 2,926 Bitcoin in the quarter. Its Q2 earnings increased 228% year-on-year to $132.8 million.Magazine: Bitcoin is on a clash with Net Zero pledges
